Class Description

This class is intended for the controls contractor or technician who has completed the ECS315 class who wish to apply the Carrier Comfort Controller in custom applications. This course covers the Carrier customized controller programming language called BEST++. The class addresses code writing and the object oriented programming methods of the Best++ in developing customized programs. Students will learn the skills necessary to modify or augment Carrier’s standard HVAC algorithms, modify setpoint tables, occupancy tables and associated algorithm parameters. These skills allow the student to develop a custom program to control loop pumping systems,, boiler systems, loop valves, cooling towers, cooling tower bypass, exhaust fans, lighting, etc. Students spend over 75% of the class time working with programs on CC6400 controllers through Network Service Tool V. Exercises include actually writing a custom program, compiling the program, downloading a program. Uploading a program and debugging a program. The skills from this class give the controls contractor the skills and knowledge to apply the Carrier Comfort controller to provide highly flexible solutions to their customers.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Architecture and fundamentals of a BEST++ program.
  • Flowcharting.
  • BEST++ statements and syntax rules.
  • How to write programs in the PC 'programmer's environment'
  • Basic debugging techniques and basic documentation techniques.
  • To become familiar with Carrier's BEST newsletter service.

A cumulative score of 70% is required to pass this course. The score is a combination of attendance, class participation, and a demonstration of skills and knowledge through quizzes and/or work sessions.

Prerequisites: Those attending should have previously attended ECS111. Understanding basic controls and HVAC principles, as well as HVAC systems is also required. Computer program writing skills are helpful but not necessary. It is highly recommended that the student have an intimate working knowledge of the Comfort Controller algorithms. This is typically defined as one who has worked with, programmed and debugged algorithms within a Comfort Controller for at least one year.
