Class Description

Today's HVAC systems rely on electronic circuits to operate safely and efficiently, but troubleshooting these circuits requires an understanding of the logic and troubleshooting procedures as they apply to electronic circuits. All too often good circuit boards are replaced because technicians don't understand the functions of the board. After this class, students will be better equiped to troubleshoot problems associated with electronic circuit boards. This class is designed to build a better understanding of electronic components, both analog and digital, found in both residential and commercial HVAC control circuits. Topics include, switching devices, timing circuits, digital controls, logic circuits, memory types and microprocessor architecture. Students will learn how to diagnose problems on control boards used in control basic system operation, economizer control, gas heating control, and heat pump defrost. Safety and an understanding of the importance of ESD and its preventions are stressed. The class is a mix of classroom and lab activitiies analyzing boards.

A cumulative score of 70% is required to pass this course. The score is a combination of attendance, class participation, and a demonstration of skills and knowledge through quizzes and/or work sessions.
